Mission For Migrant Workers holds successful Charity Raffle Draw 2020

The Mission For Migrant Workers held their annual Charity Raffle Draw 2020. The months of arduous preparation and ticket-selling culminated in the draw last Sunday, 22 November 2020. It was a successful activity, as the tickets were almost sold out.

According to the Mission's community relations officer Johannie Tong, they decided to push through with the charity raffle even with social restrictions in place due to the increased and urgent needs of migrant workers. 'Migrant workers returning here from their home countries are quarantined in hotels lack food and water. More migrant workers need assistance now due to their contract termination because of their employer's precarious employment.'

Tong continued, 'We were concerned how to go about the charity raffle with the social restrictions in place. But it did not mean we were going to forego it altogether. Are we supposed to cancel it, when more and more migrant workers need our assistance? Of course not. We can put safeguards in place instead.'

This is evident in the ticket selling, collection, and the draw itself. For the first time ever, online payment through QR codes was made an option for ticket payment. The final collection on the day itself, only two people were at the booth at all times, while chairs for those waiting their turn to give the payment were some feet apart from each other. The draw was streamed live on Facebook, doing away with the need to gather a large number of people. Only the essential people were gathered for the draw, or the guests of honor who will pick the winning tickets.

Ms Tong opened the program of the draw by appreciating everyone who participated, whether they bought or sold tickets, helped in the promotion of the activity, or supported in some other way. Mission intern Tariro Mufute was the host of the draw, introducing the guests of honor who drew the winning tickets. Surati Adriano of Indonesian Migrant Domestic Workers drew the first five consolation prize winners. Dolores Balladares Pelaez, chair of United Filipinos in Hong Kong then picked the remaining five. The consolation prize winners won a gift certificate. Sringatin of IMWU picked the third prize winner, who won an Apple watch. Second prize winning ticket was drawn by Fr. Dwight dela Torre, chairman of the board of the Mission. The second prize is a Lenovo Thinkpad laptop. The first prize winner was picked by Lynda Chen, an advisory board member of the Mission. The first prize is an iPhone 11. The draw was closed by a touching message from Fr. Dwight.

'Thank you for participating! Thank you to all the guests, the volunteers, and migrants who gave their best for the success of the event. We did it! Thank you for ensuring we will be able to serve even more migrants anytime, anywhere.' Tong ended.###
